Kessler acquired the first of the vaulted cellars in what is today the KESSLER-area on the market square in Esslingen (the south part of which was renamed Georg-Christian-von-Kessler-Platz in 2013). In the early days, the production of sparkling wine was associated with high risks, as often the bottles could not withstand the internal pressure and therefore burst. Due to the explosion of bottles G. C. Kessler & Cie suffered losses of up to half its annual production until finally the manufacturing of robust glass became possible in Germany.
