Rudolf Weiss (1871-1943), the art-loving son of August, commissioned well-known artists such as the Simplicissimus cartoonist Th. Th. Heine (1867-1948), to develop ideas for the promotion of the KESSLER brand. In the years before 1924, this bold and unconventional advertising appealed to a modern audience which had seen enough of the pomp and sabre-rattling of the late Wilhelminian era. The advertisement depicting the sparkling as a warship is particularly striking. It is an allusion to the ‘Schaumweinsteuer’, introduced in 1902 to finance the Reich’s naval armament.
