For its centenary, the House of KESSLER organized a major competition for artists on the theme ‘German sparkling wine’. By that time the product was known as ‘Sekt’. The reason for the name change was that, after the Treaty of Versailles came into force in 1919, solely sparkling wines from the French Champagne region were allowed to be labelled ’Champagne’. The Trade Museum (‘Landesgewerbemuseum’) in Stuttgart even hosted a promotional contest ‘for and about Sekt.‘ More than 400 artists from all regions of Germany took part in the event.
